Wine Unify Code of Ethics Statement
Wine Unify is a charitable organization aimed to champion diversity in the wine industry through a variety of initiatives, including outreach, awards, mentorship, and virtual content. We are a registered 501c3 federal tax-exempt nonprofit as well as a registered California nonprofit corporation. Our tax ID can be found in the homepage of our website.
Participation in the organization’s programs as a Mentor, Board Member, Advisory Board Member, or Ambassador is on a volunteer-only basis and is subject to the observance of the organization’s Code of Ethics. Please read below for our values, procedures, and expectations for our volunteers.
I understand that:
Wine Unify seeks to create an inclusive, welcoming environment for all participants. While we respect differences of opinions and engaging dialogue, harmful or hurtful language will not be tolerated and we reserve the right to remove you as a volunteer if this courtesy is violated. Abusive language, discourtesy, or rudeness towards any volunteer or award-recipient is unacceptable.
Any verbal, physical or visual harassment of another participant or volunteer is strictly unacceptable. Violations should be reported to a member of the Board of Directors and will be addressed within co-founding leadership.
In accordance with 501c(3) regulations, Wine Unify as a corporation may not make political statements that relate to the election or promotion of any political candidate as an organization.
I am volunteering my time with Wine Unify without any expectation of pay, and that I may resign from my volunteer role at any time if I feel uncomfortable or unable to perform my role. We ask that all volunteers provide written notice so that we may fill your role in a reasonable timeframe.
I may be asked to stop performing my volunteer duties at any time.
If I am driving a vehicle for any responsibilities related to my volunteer work with Wine Unify, that I must have vehicle insurance and that Wine Unify is not liable for any injury.
I am encouraged to come forward with new ideas, positive force for change, and with any concerns I feel the leadership team at Wine Unify should be aware.
Relatives or subordinates in my normal workplace may not be recipients of Wine Unify’s annual awards for wine education.
Recipients of awards will be evaluated on an anonymous basis.
I am expected to put my best foot forward as a leader in the wine industry and volunteer representative of Wine Unify.
Wine Unify is not currently affiliated with any other educational organization, though we do accept sponsorships and support.
The Wine Unify Leadership Team, including Alicia Towns Franken, Mary Margaret McCamic, DLynn Proctor, and Martin Reyes, is here to support you and answer any questions or concerns you have. We want you to feel comfortable sharing feelings or stressors with us, and we in turn will treat all of you with the respect and appreciation you deserve. We are so grateful for you, and cannot wait to launch this exciting new adventure!
Summary of Volunteer Expectations
Mentors
We ask that mentors find a minimum of 3 months annually to donate three to four hours per month (as necessary) to the support of one or two of our scholarship recipients. Mentorship will be virtual unless close enough to be done in person. Email correspondence and phone calls will likely be the most common form of communication. We will leave you on the site year-round as motivation and inspiration. We are happy to promote you, your work, accomplishments, and beyond in features or on social media! You may serve as a rotating mentor, and we can utilize your time according to your availability. Mentorship will be student-led, but we do ask that you have a welcome statement that we can help you form for each student so they feel comfortable reaching out to you with questions.
Ambassadors:
This is an evolving role that is quite flexible; we ask that you be open to coordinating events and tastings with us to promote outreach in your area as frequently as time allows (minimum 1 time per year to start). We can help promote these efforts, and you!
Board Members:
We anticipate meeting 4-6 times per year to discuss growth strategies. We ask that you do your best to be present and commit to bettering Wine Unify with your expertise. If you are no longer to serve on the board, we ask that you give us written notice in advance.
Advisory Board Members:
We ask that you serve as a resource and subject matter expert as able or interested.
Other Role(s):
To be discussed individually.
